Open Your Eyes to the Crisis in Syria
Take ONE MINUTE to update yourself on the Crisis in Syria and the plight of Refugees- many children:
A portion of a report reprinted from the UNICEF website:
Update of humanitarian situation / updated July 2013
Covering the period 1 January through 31 December, which corresponds to the United Nations Syria Regional Response Plan 5
Two years of violence and protracted armed conflict have wrought devastation on Syria’s children and families. Since December 2012, an additional one million Syrian children and their families have fled the violence and destruction in Syria, resulting in some 1.8 million refugees seeking refuge in Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Iraq and Egypt.
1 The UN estimates that there could be over 5 million people in need of humanitarian assistance in the region by the end of December 2013, including 3.45 million refugees.
2 More than half the refugees fleeing Syria are children, who have borne witness to acts of violence that threaten to rob them of their childhood. Many children have been killed, some have been detained and many have endured inhumane conditions.
3 They have had the right to safe education and the potential to grow, learn and develop denied them for over two years. Many children suffer shortages of water, sanitation facilities and adequate health care.
4 Those who have fled to relative safety in the surrounding countries find themselves vulnerable to additional risk factors: crowded and unsanitary camp conditions, hostility from host communities, child labor and sexual exploitation.
